I'm a new player, just working on "level 1". I had a slight detour after starting on this while I worked on the mechanics of tongue blocking with a G harp and just pulled my MB 1896 A harp to start working on "Walk With Me".
I noticed something weird - the air holes, when viewed from the face of the harp, were uneven. In fact, the little wood pieces move back and forth pretty easily and I could adjust the spacing. But it moves out of position pretty easily too. Then I noticed that end of the comb also stick out unevenly when viewed from the side. continue reading...
I have just joined having purchased a C harmonica following a lot of You Tube reviews. But that's ok as the C lesson on here is ideal to get me going as a new starter. I'm UK based.
Does anyone think age is an issue to learning the harmonica? I'm getting on, approaching 64, and wondering if my aspirations will fast outrun my capabilities and I will give up through frustration.
Be interested to know your views and if there are any other "older" beginners out there.
Ordered a "C" harmonica because that was the general consensus most youtubers had on what to get as a beginners. Low and behold I use the code for my free lessons and go to fundamental and they say I need an "A" harmonica? Are there any beginner lessons that use a "C" because I'm not about to order another before I even know if this something I'll truly enjoy. Thanks.
Between being stuck at home and thinking about my life-long dream of learning to play the harmonica like my grandma would back in her WAC days, I'm excited to have found David's website and to be joining this warm, vibrant community. Memorial Day seems like an especially fitting time to dive in. Here's to you, grandma Hope!
In terms of playability which hohner could you compare to a session steel? Without the price factor and durability. Just think about side by side equivalents playability and sound. Thanks
I'm trying the free version of Harp Ninja before purchasing it to help with bending. I've noticed that many holes (especially blows) indicate I'm playing sharp (about 25% on the circle). Most of the low draw notes indicate I'm right on tone, which seems good, but given a beginners tendency to play them flat, it makes me wonder if they too are skewed to the sharp side. Similar results for both my C and A harmonicas. Have others experienced this? Is it simply my playing? a microphone issue (i'm using cheap cellphone earbud/mic for now)? or some other setting I haven't uncovered? continue reading...
