Farewell Blues

"Farewell Blues": I know there are several pieces with this title. This spontaneous improvisation was inspired by a German guitarist, Gregor Hilden, and his Farewell Blues. I used his main riff and backing track.

The song is quite sad, but sometimes you just want to hear something sad. I once heard, "Sadness flies away on the wings of time." By the end of the song, another four minutes will have passed. :-)

"The Rolling Stones' Jumpin' Jack Flash" covered by The Blue Shift band

Hello All, Our band practiced the famous track of the Rolling Stones. I practiced various articulation/embouchure technique during our practice session of the famous Rolling Stones track. I found this sample file the best for maintaining a balance between long and short notes—long notes to accompany the singer and long multiple bended headshaking technique in case of solo parts, with short notes played between the lyrics. continue reading...

Comfortably Numb with Harp

This song by Pink Floyd can be accompanied quite well on the harmonica and the guitar solos can also be played easily. The song is in Bm. I play a D harp in 4th position. In the part where I play 16th notes (0:52 - 1:53 and 3:15 - 4:17), the band changes the key between Bm and Am. That's why I alternate between a D and a C harp here. The solos are played with a lot of gain. Maybe not everyone likes that, but I think it fits when you try to replace an electric guitar with the harp. continue reading...

Tribute to Albert King’s Crosscut Saw

Posted Tue, 03/25/2025 - 15:37 by Laszlo Konyeczki

Hello All, Blue Shift our new band performed an Albert King song Crosscut Saw. In 1966, Albert King recorded his version calling it "Crosscut Saw". The same lyrics as McClennan's "Cross Cut Saw Blues" were used, except for two verses which were replaced by guitar solos. However, King uses a different arrangement based on an Afro-Cuban rhythm pattern, similar to that of his 1962 song "I Get Evil". Our version is lighter, faster and "a bit minorized", key changed to A. Played on D harmonica 2nd position in pentatonic minor and blues scale. There are errors, we have to work on this a lot.

A B.B. King Song in Rock Blues Style: Our Concert Recording

Concert Overview At the end-of-semester concert of the Hungarian Rock School, we performed in front of an audience of 700-800 people. At my request, we played in the rock-blues style, specifically covering B.B. King. The last rehearsal material is now being uploaded. The concert was recorded in stereo across 8 tracks and will later be released on YouTube.

Rehearsal Process Over three rehearsal sessions, we developed the concept in a total of 2.5 hours. I also asked David for advice: during the vocals, I should attempt to play longer octave notes on the harmonica. continue reading...

Blowin' The Family Jewels - William Clarke

Another great William Clarke tune I've put a lot of work on (and continue to do so, this one is tough a cookie). From his record Groove Time.

Lee Oskar in G (3rd position) played through a Greg Heumann custom mic (same element as Bulletini) and Lone Wolf's Harp Attack.

Backing tracking by Shoblues, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnqxSseSTcQ slowed down to ~80% speed. Mixed in Bandlab.

The Work Song - William Clarke

I've been working on transcribing and studying The Work Song as played by the great William Clarke on his record Serious Intentions. I really like this song, especially Clarke's cover in West Coast Blues chromatic style (sorry Butterfield fans, but I like this one better :)). He plays a killer solos with abundant usage of octaves.
