Discovered a truly wonderful CD with some melodic harmonica played during a set change at a CA music festival – Joe Weed and the Vultures. Ten instrumental guitar hits from the '50s and '60s played on acoustic instruments featuring Norton Buffalo, Rob Ickes, David Grisman, Joe Weed, Todd Phillips and others. Songs include: Pipeline, Apache, Sleepwalk, Walk Don’t Run, Wipeout, Rebel Rouser, Green Onions, Alley Cat, and Late Date. My personal favorite is Stranger on the Shore which brings a tear to my eyes as I miss Norton. continue reading...
A recording from my new band's first ever gig- an outdoor biker festival in East Yorkshire, UK. My rig was a stock Fender Pro Junior with a Harp Commander Junior preamp and Boss reverb pedal. The experience taught me that a 15 watt amp with 1x10" speaker doesn't really cut it with a full band in this kind of situation and the harp gets a bit drowned out at times but I was quite pleased with things overall given that it was our first live performance. Picture of girl unknown- another band member uploaded the track!
Album "Little George Sueref" - freakin Blues groovin - love the vocals - and sparse and tasty harp - reminds of Slim Harpo using just enough harp just where it was needed
You should really check out Willis Jackson, he's a sax player but it's still very useful cause he plays very cool bluesy licks that can be converted to harmonica.
people like Gary Primich probably listened a lot to this kinda stuff.
Does anybody remember some old R&B style harmonica tunes, like Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae?" I don't, but I need some suggestions for a set of something in that style. If not R&B, then rock and roll but old.
