Black Jack in the key of D

Posted Thu, 03/27/2014 - 14:23 by Super_Dave
Super_Dave's picture

This was a version of Ray charles' Black Jack done in the key of D at a local blues jam.

I played very sparsely but I feel that I played to the mood of the song.

It was my first time forcing myself to only tongue block during a live performance so I was pretty nervous.

Please let me know what you think about it.

Thanks,

Super Dave

Blues in the Dark

I couldn't find a good jam track for this.  "Blues in the Dark" is a Swing (ii V I chords in bars 9-11) with a quick change (IV chord on bar 2), but at a slower tempo than most swing jam tracks.  So I used a shuffle, at the right tempo, but it's a standard 12 bar (IV V I in bars 9-11, no quick change).  In spite of that it kind a sort a works.

Anyway it's a great tune and lots of fun to work on.  I hope to play it with a band (with the right chord progression) at some point.

Blues for Big Nate in F

Of course is is based on David's artisit's study of Jerry Portnoy's song. Having failed to find backtrack in E,  I used a backtrack "Quarter to Midnight" from http://www.bluesharptracks.com/ in a key of F, so my harp is in Bb. I am open to your ctitique.

Tom's Tune

This is an original song we jammed into existence and recorded live in my living room...not  blues but does have harp choruses and accompaniment playing (which is hopefully more tasteful than intrusive)...any comments on the song or playing would be nice...feedback is good...

Juke Redux

I decided to work on Juke again, to tighten up the rhythm.  I used Shoji Naito's backing track.  I'm not happy with the recorded sound of my amp though.

Steve

UPDATE 2/18/2014:  I rerecorded it, movign the mic from the amp back about 4 feet from the speaker.  I think that gives are more natural sound.  Previously I had it right on the grill cloth.

Christelle Berthon's Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

Not blues; Christelle Berthon's arrangement of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

I tabbed out Christelle's rendition using the Amazing Slowdowner.

Been a while since I posted anything so I thought I would do something a little festival, and starting to get appropriate for the uk which is getting chilly.

Hope you enjoy
