Hi

I have decided to start my tuning adventure by having a go with a MB that I accidentally put through the washing machine. So nothing to lose!

I need your advice on which temperment to use. At this time I am working through Dave's studies. I have kind of decided to go for compromised just. However, following the links there seems to be quite an array of possibilities i.e. www.tuningtable.com. I am not at the stage, and probably never will be, of being able to decide what will sound good. So could you let me know what you recommend.

Thanks in advance.

My Tuning Charts Summary

If that can help, here is my summary of the different tunings. For the most, I use 19-Limit Just Intonation.

If somebody wants a PDF copy, send me an email. I can't attach it here.

Cheers,

Eddy

HARPSMITH Compromised Tuning

Cool stuff Eddy! Thank you for sharing your tuning charts.

Tip:

  1. Learn to tune to zero on all reeds. This will provide you with a base line--where all of your chords (playing at least three notes at the same time) will sound unpleasant (it will quiver and sound rough).
  2. Next, select a tuning schema and begin flattening and sharping the various reeds to match the tuning charts. This will train your ear to "hear" the chords come to life--smooth and pleasant to listen to.

A favorite tuning schema of mine, as well as many other harmonica players is a Rick Epping (retired from Hohner USA 2005) inspired tuning, known as--you guessed it, the HARPSMITH compromised tuning. Nice chords for traditional voicing and solid notes for melodic playing.

Your Harpsmith, Kinya
