Hello,

When sealing a Marine Band comb, do you sand before & after sealing?

I was also wonder what grade of sondpaper you go up to?

Thanks!

Preferred Sandpaper for MB combs

Hey Mr. Thunk,
Sanding before and after the sealing process is highly recommended. I have been very pleased with using a 3M non-clogging sandpaper, "P400g #216U Production RN Paper A wt. Open Coat Fre-Cut".

I tape the edges of a full sheet of sandpaper onto a flat piece of glass or acrylic. Make certain to apply even downward pressure while pushing and pulling the comb across the sandpaper.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the quick response!

Thanks so much for bringing up the glass. I was trying to figure out what to use as a flat surface to sand on and I forgot about using glass! It's a little less expensive than the piece of metal I was looking at buying!

I was also wondering if you round the corners (comb & reedplate) on Marine Bands that you are work on? If so, can you tell me how you go about doing this? I was thinking about investing in a 10" bench top disk sander?

Thanks!,
-Ryan

P.S. Thanks for all the great harmonica workshop articles. You've made me quite motivated to get into customizing harps!

sealing Marine Band

I want to seal the pearwood combs on my Marine Bands and I need to know what type of sealer or shellac I should use, how long to let it cure, etc. I could use all the advice I can get! Thanks Tom Bader

Zinnser

I use Zinnser Amber Shellac to seal my MB comb. It dries fast and does't smell. Richard Sleigh told me that one.

Recommended sealer for Marine Band combs

Big 10-4 everyone. Zinnsser's Bulls Eye Shellac is the way to go.
