Hi David,Regarding accompaniment study 4, I was wondering what notes we should target apart from other notes from the chord to signal chord changes. Would the notes from the next chord be a good idea and they will fit the current chord in the background? Many thanks,Eddie

Hello Eddie. A pickup

Hello Eddie. A pickup commonly works just fine... one, two, three, four... notes leading into the chord change. It doesn't matter so much what the notes are, but the fact that they lead to a chord tone on the downbeat of the coming chord change. You can use notes of the new chord (the chord you're about to play)... it's okay (and sometimes the cooler way) to do that. Experiment and see what sounds good to you.

Yes, exactly... a small lick

Yes, exactly... a small lick that leads into the new chord. The blues scale can work. Also, mine your study songs for pickups. Licks on the right hand side of the page (bars 4, 8, and 12) lead to strong chord changes (bars 1, 5, and 9). Look for pickups there, you'll find tons (especially as you get to Levels 3 and above).
