Hey Skip,

I have a Memphis Mini amp that I just purchased and it really fulfills all my requirements for my main amp for practicing and going to small to medium jams. It is an excellent amp with great range of dynamics.  (Occasionally I play with ridiculously loud players) I have a Wood Mic from Greg Heumann on the way in several months with a Black Cr element! can't wait! I enjoy the the full range of dynamics I achieve with the MM amp and bulletini (from Greg Heumann). Bulletini is a great mic! I am looking to add another amp to my arsenal. I am trying to decide which direction to go. The Hot Rod Deville looks like a good bet for monster volume and a project that I can work to alter for Harp (tubes, transisters etc.)

Do you have any Masco/Bogan etc. PA Amps that you would recommend, or that I could purchase from you? Is there a limit on what speaker cabinets they can run? Is a 5 watt Masco able to run a 4X10 Speaker Cabinet with relatively the same volume as a Bassman? I know wattage with amps isn't a totally direct correlation to volume, as it depends on how much you can drive the amp with feedback etc.

The HarpGear HG35, look

The HarpGear HG35, look at: http://www.harpgear.com

I have never tried one but i think these amps are good and don't need so much mods.

2nd amp?

Hello Erik- If you need a high-power amp, a RI Bassman is a good choice.  The Deville has an awful lot of knobs that you don't need and modifying one (other than tube swaps) is impractical because of the printed circuitboard construction. I also think it is a bad idea to buy an amp that would need a lot of modifications to work for you.

No, a 5-watt amp driving a 4-10 cab is not as loud as a Bassman.

PA heads are groovy, but I would say that a combo amp might be more practical for you at this point.

2nd Amp?

Thanks for the advice! I would love to get a Harpgear amp but for the money this first purchase the RI Bassman seems the way for me. Thanks for the pratical advice on what would be a good choice for a larger amp, Skip. I purchased the Bassman as I mentioned in my resistor question and I have been very happy with it. Much friendlier than I anticipated from what I have heard about the amp. Even with the 12ax7's that were originally in the preamp section.

Thanks!
