Are there any warm up exercises that you would recommend doing at the start of a practice session?

Or do you think its best to just jump straight into the music?

Thanks - I'm trying to get a bit more structured with my practice sessions and am a little unsure how to work them.

Answer

Luckily the harp, unlike other instruments, needs no warmup to get rolling. General rule of thumb for one hour practice time is 10m on technique, 30m on song and 20m application (using the licks you learn in the Chorus Form process). In that opening 10m you could use any of the exercises found in the tongue blocking or bending studies on the site... just choose the ones that are appropriate to your skill level.

Good idea, I will incorporate

Good idea, I will incorporate those exercises. I just skipped over them quickly and then jumped into the songs, but I see now how important it is to keep going over them..

I'm a little unclear what you mean by song and application.

By song do you mean learning new parts of the current song that I am working through? (Currently I'm going through no. 1 - walk with me)

By application do you mean improvising with learned licks?

Many thanks.

Answer

Your "song" right now is "Walk with Me," your new techniques in action that build movement, vocabulary, etc. Application will start for you after you finish "Temperature" in TB Study #2, the Chorus Form process. Keep up the good work!
