Hi Dave

I have a query in relation to producing Wa Wa's. In your video you say to leave the hands in the open position after the last wa wa so as not to muffle the sound as you continue to play. Is this just for a bar or few notes? I ask this as it appears contrary to the closed hand position that we use foir normal playing.

Thanks in advance

Answer

Hello bordercollie. The reason why we close our hands is in preparation for the Wa Wa, when playing with a bullet mic or for special muted effect... otherwise they stay open. The left and right hands are on the harmonica for normal play, and in a cupped shape, but you'll notice the back is open (a lot, or just slightly) and generally the fingers are loose. The only player I know plays with a closed cup the majority of the time is Phil Wiggins. It's a cool sound for him, but it is unique.
