Hi Dave

I have a question in relation to Wa Wa's.

I have been looking at your post on 26.8.13 (tip of the day). Am I correct in assuming that when there is a wa notation above a note that the wa wa effect continues with a sigle breath until the note changes i.e. the first bar of chorus (solo harmonica 4) where the wa wa continues until the note drops from 2 draw to 2 whole note bend?

If there is a wa symbol above two identical notes i.e. Ex1 of the cupping and hand effects study there is a wa notation above the each 2 and 2+ note and similarly the 5/4 combination. Does this mean that in this case these 2 identical notes are played using one breath rather than using one contiuous breath for both? All the other notes in the excercise have different notes or note combinations below each wa notation thus if my thinking is correct all this notes would be played with separate breaths.

I am afraid that my ears don't pick up these things when I am listening to the songs.

Thanks in advance

Answer

Good morning bordercollie.

You are correct, if you stay on one note, like the 2 draw played twice in Ex. 1 with a "Wa" notation above it, it's all one breath and the separation you're hearing is from the Wa effect.

The 4/5 combos at the end of Bar 8 have dips. This could be one breath, with a "Ya Ya" type movement of the tongue, or two breaths with a "Kya Kya" articulation. So in this case, the dips change things a bit.

The 2" 2" 2 at the end of Bar 11 I would use one breath.

In the end it's up to you how you articulate, but the Wa effect comes through stronger with one breath if you have the opportunity.
