Hi Greg

in terms of quality of sound/signal, is there any difference having a volume control built into the mic vs. using an inline volume control like the vintage Stagecraft or the new BLueX Lab volume control?

I have a new BlueXlab volume control and am thinking about changing at least one of my Astatic JT 30s from the volume control in it with its 1/4 in guitar jack to the necessary connection in order to use the BlueX lab volume control. Have any idea what your charge would be to make that change?  thanks

Hi, Doug There is no

Hi, Doug

There is no difference in the way an internal or external volume control is connected to the element and amp - provided it is the same value potentiometer.

I use different value potentiometers based upon the element in the microphone in my BlowsMeAway Productions volume controls. That optimizes the performance for the particular element.

JT30's don't have 1/4" inputs unless they've been modified - so it is difficult for me to say what would be involved in replacing that with a Switchcraft screw-on connector. I charge $35 when the shell can simply be drilled and tapped for the new connector, such as one of the Shure bullet shells, but $55 when I need to fabricate some sort of adaptation bushing, as is usually the case with JT30's. Do check though - most JT30's HAVE screw-on connectors. Could your 1/4" jacvk be a screw-on to 1/4" adapter? If so - just unscrew it and then screw on your volume control.
