Hi Dave,

In your review of the VHT Special 6 you mentioned that you bought one and intended to explore modifications to make it a more harp specific amp. Did you make any mods that an average "joe ten-holer" like myself could pull off?

Apologies if you've posted this info and I just didn't find it.

Thanks!!

Hello Mar-T. I did experiment

Hello Mar-T. I did experiment with it more after the review, even a speaker change, and the end result is that I left it the way it was. It's a fairly clean amp, so if you're looking for a dirty, distorted amp, I would not say it's the right amp.

Thanks. Here's my mods.

I've had one of these VHTs for a couple of years and haven't been geting the sound I hoped for. it's by no means bad, but it's no MegaTone, either.

Recently I replaced the stock (chinese, I believe) 6V6 tube with a JJ 6V6, and the stock 12AX7 with a JJ 5751 tube. This helped a little, but I've come to the conclusion, based on your experience and mine, that some major capacitor and/or resistor changes would be needed to get the sought-after tone. Like you said, this may not be the right amp for me.

Anyway, I appreciate you trying different speakers, that saved me some money and effort.
