Hi David,

In Gary's Blues and Take It Easy Now, one of the things I'm struggling most with is the rhythem. So far, I've been able to figure out previous songs just by repetition and using my ear but with these songs it feels like I need to be counting the beats and I'm struggling to do that and play the right notes. Any tips?

Thanks

Hello avkaric. Rhythm, by

Hello avkaric.

Rhythm, by far, is the most challenging element in the study of music. As each song comes to you in your advancing studies, you'll be challenged more and more. Gary's Blues, due to it's upbeat-focused accompaniment track (what we call a "Flat Tire" groove), requires you to really focus on your sense of the downbeat (tapping your foot for example) to stay in time. Take It Easy Now, being a slow blues, brings its own challenges, mainly keeping in time with a slower tempo. In the end, reps are the key.

Play with the original track until you can play it well. Then play with the jam track, making note of the areas you move out of time. Work on those same areas with the original track, counting where you need to on the same problematic areas to really own the rhythm, until you don't need to count when playing with the jam track.
