A long time ...

If you've never played harmonica before, getting clear single notes either tongue-blocking or puckering can take a while. If you've been playing for a while, but puckering only, it might take even longer to de-train your muscles. I'd give it at least four months, and then feel good if it only takes four weeks or so. And pay attention in David's lessons here about the right amount of tongue pressure, angle, etc. And a Joe Filisko Tongue Block Trainer (or a homemade one - there are plans on the internet for making your own out of the handle of a plastic milk carton) can be a big help if you're just starting out. Progress comes at differnt speeds for different folks, so don't be anxious about how long it seems to take to master techniques. The good news is that harmonica is something you can practice for the rest of your life and never run out of things to improve on. And along the way you'll have lots of "ah-ha" moments when something you thought you'd never master all of a sudden really clicks.

No worries - it's a harmony-ca

One nice thing about working on single notes is that you can play melodies even if you're getting notes in the holes that neighbor the hole that contains the melody note. By design, nearly all neighboring holes harmonize nicely with the melody (Draw 6 and 7 played together being the only doscordant combination).
