Hello David,

my name is Teo and I am new to blues harmonica and especially tongue blocking techniques. I used to accompany my guitar with the harmonica mostly by playing chords and some simple melodies using the pucker technique ( I think), that I learned through some videos online.

Your lessons have been eye opening and give me a whole new experience in harmonica. Also, your lessons explained to me why I could not play the blues, at least properly. I had the wrong technique. And that made me to want to quit altogether and I did. For the last 5 years I have not touched a harmonica and I gave away mine to my niece. Now since time allows , I wanted to start again and I bought a harmonica (Hohner Proharp C ) and lead me to your website. After watching a couple of videos I understood the importance of correct technique, and thus I want to retrain with solid foundations. That is why I am writing to you.

The issue at hand:

In Ex 1.3 of the trill you say play the first note and move slowly to next one (from 4 to 5 etc.) and then shake. I assume gradually in incling speed.  I can not do it for some reason.

I tried paying the 4th while tongue blocking 1,2,3 and then 5th by blocking 2,3,4. When I play them individually its fine. When I try to shake, the sound does not match the one in the video (Not in terms of key but in temrs of the playfullness) and it sounds more like the 4th is played and 5th is kind of blocked or played very briefly or something. I can not put my finger on in. Then I tried playing it the way I know with the pucker and it was fine. Thus, I assume that it has something to do with tongue blocking technique.

Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong and could you give me any advice or tips on how to do it correctly?

Kind regards,

Teo

Hello Teo, welcome back to

Hello Teo, welcome back to the site. I'm sorry that the introduction of TB in the past caused you to quit... I hope you enjoy your renewed interest in the harmonica, with the tongue block embouchure this time.

It sounds like you're not shaking enough (moving far enough in the shake). Try moving more right-to-left. In that lesson there is a "Submit your recording for evaluation"... record your shake and send it to me there... I'll be able to help you better if I can hear it.
