OK!, I've watch the videos several times and here are my questions about this one technique.

When you are doing the scooping my understanding is that you are trying to make wider the tip on the side of the reed that air is entering like a funnel? Does that sound right? (I understand the scooping is an angle leaving the parameter as tight as possible)

Then the next question would be which side do you scoop? would it be different on a draw plate as to a blow plate?

I'd be interested in the article or pictures of the vortex thing you mentioned from some time back, anything like that around?

Sorry so many questions!

Reed Plate Tip Scooping

The tip scooping technique is loosely based on Bernoulli's Principle, "if the air flowing past the top surface is moving faster than the air flowing past the bottom surface, then Bernoulli's principle implies that the pressure on the top surfaces will be lower above than below. This pressure difference results in an upwards lifting force".

The tip scooping will funnel more air into the open reed, resulting in more lift with less effort from the player and a slightly brighter voicing. If you wish to experiment, I recommend making this modification on the reed side of both blow and draw reed plates.

Your Harpsmith,
Kinya
