I don't have a band to play with. All I can do is play with jam tracks or a metronome. What is the best way to work on making sure I am playing in time with a band especially on 1/8 notes or faster. I have a hard time telling when I am playing in time especially since no one is here to tell me I am not. Thanks for your help.

Hello cmidden. Recording

Hello cmidden. Recording yourself and then listening back to the recording with sheet music in front of you is best method.

You can also send in recordings to me when you think you have it, but want to make sure.

It's also common to take private lessons with a music instructor in your area. If you contact your local junior college you may find some inexpensive college student tutors that can help you with your rhythm training. Otherwise, local music stores have music instructors, they're just a little bit more expensive. I did rhythm training with an instructor for two years... it was very helpful.

Thanks

Those are great ideas.

I had been taking lessons with a local instructor but he has moved to Texas, and I have been unable to find another, but I will keep looking.

I will take you up on the offer to check my timing. I sincerely appreciate the concern and guidance you are providing. It really is priceless.

Thanks!

Metronome

in addition to all that David said, for me the metronome is a humbling experience when it comes to playing in time. I practise quarter notes eighth notes, triplets and it keeps me honest. A recent recording opportunity had a click track being used in addition to the three piece band playing. That was certainly interesting and again humbling.
