If you make practice convenient, you’re more likely to do it. Set up your practice space so you can walk in and start practicing without having to set anything up.
Sometimes a section of a song can be extremely challenging. Digging in and working for extended blocks of time can work, but often it’s better to work on that passage for a short period of time (moving to other study areas afterwards), revisiting it each day for focused short periods of practice. Though it may take more calendar days to learn that passage, it takes less overall time. This method takes advantage of your brain’s ability to work on problems when there is sleep between practice sessions.

Recording yourself and listening back is an important part of the learning process (an amazing self-assessment tool). Have the sheet music of the song you’re reviewing in front of you as you listen back. Highlight areas that need work. Work on those areas for a couple of days and rerecord yourself and repeat this self-assessment process. You don’t need to use an elaborate recording setup—the memo app on your phone is perfect for quick and easy recording.

You must fail. Stretch… fail… laugh about it… correct it. We must reach to gain, and failure is an every-day part of the learning processes—it is the learning process. Enjoy the process of practice—this is time you have gifted to yourself.
