Hey, Kinya, hope all is well.

I posted this in Winslow's forum and he suggested I repost here.

I just recently bought a Hohner Rocket in B in order to record one song but I find the 3 draw sticks in unpredicatble ways. I'm slapping and drawing but all I get nothing until a moment passes and then it works. Unfortunately, this delay is enough to completely break my timing.

A few days ago, I started another song on a Rocket in D, a harp that has been little used since I bought it, and noticed the same sticking for a bit, although it was no where nearly as pronounced as on the B harp. I persisted and soon enough the stickiness went away.

Since the stickiness on the B is much more pronounced, I find I can't really play it in order to break it in. Unfortunately, I really delayed in trying it out so my return period is expired. I've never had this experience with my other Rockets before and have been playing enough to know this isn't technique.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

Ace

Hey Ace, it's been

Hey Ace, it's been awhile--good to hear from you.

If I had your patient on my examination table, I would perform the following examinations to identify possible issues:

  1. Is the gapping at the free end of the reed set properly to your playing requirements?
  2. Is the zero point at the reed base properly closing off any wasteful air leakage?
  3. Is the full length of the reed entering/exiting the reed slot evenly-like a door would swing in/out?
  4. Is the reed axis "on point", or is it off-center and hitting the sides of the reed slot?

Do you have the resources available to answer the above questions? Please advise...

Thank you, but

I don't really unsderstand these terms. I don't mean to be pedantic, but I don't have the basic knowledge needed to understand how to address these four points.

Is there a site where I can familiarize myself with these procedures?

Hello Ace, I'm glad you asked

Hello Ace, I'm glad you asked ;o)

A few years ago David and I created seven Harp Tech Study videos. For your convenience I listed the three that will be useful for you to review:

  1. https://www.bluesharmonica.com/harp_tech_studies_1
  2. https://www.bluesharmonica.com/harp_tech_studies_2
  3. https://www.bluesharmonica.com/harp_tech_study_4_reed_gapping

If after viewing a few of the Harp Tech Studies, you are not comfortable looking under the hood of your harmonicas--let's see if we can't hook you up with a solution.

No

Sadly, can't say that I've tried this yet. I'll get to it eventually, but I've jist taken delivery of a 1955 vintage Leica M3 so my attention has been focused on that for a bit, pun intended.

I may give it a shot tomorrow, but regardless I will post my results when done.

Thanks for all your help, tho. Greatly appreciated.

I Leica that a lot!

Ace: I can see why you're a bit distracted from harp maintenance for a bit. In college 50 years ago I picked up an M2 double-throw and an assortment of lenses at an estate sale. I probably pictured myself as another Robert Capa. The camera really served me well (and handled river rafting and mountaineering trips in a waterproof surplus ammo box), until some years later when I sold it to cover the costs of a growing family. Looking at current prices, had I kept it it would have been a better investment than Apple or Amazon. Enjoy the M3!
