Hello Kinya,

I recently bought a set of replacement reed plates for a M.B DX and found it difficult to start the self tapping screws into the draw plate holes when assembling the comb and new plates ( to the point of turning out the Philips heads!) I used the Hohner Philips screwdriver but I'm not even certain that I tapped them into the plate square. Any tips for getting these started easier, could you pre tap them somehow ?

Kind Regards Dave

by the way I'm really enjoying the Harp tech study videos

Self tapping screws

Hey Dave,
Yeah, I know it can definitely be frustrating that Hohner provided you with a Phillips screwdriver to handle non-Phillips screw heads -- ridiculous! Hohner uses Pozi type screws. Ever since Jon Harl turned me on to the Wiha Pozi Drive Screwdriver ( #262/PZ 1X60) I have not had any stripped screw issues. The best $4.30 you ever spent. http://www.wihatools.com/200seri/262serie.htm

Regardless, I recommend you dip the tip of your screws (that almost sounded nasty ;o) with some sort of lubricant--mineral oil actually works well, without the nasty smell of a WD-40 type product. With the Pozi drive screwdriver you will be able to start and turn your self tapping screws straight and true.

Allow the screw to bottom out, then torque it to the right just a pinch. Be mindful to apply the same amount of tightness to all screws. After you had reassembled your MB, peer into the slots (especially by holes 1~3) and make certain that light does not peek through where the reed plates meet the comb. If it does, you will have air leakage and your harmonica will not play well. Disassemble, and torque those screws a little more.

Let me know how it goes Dave,
~Kinya
