Hi...ever hear Sonny Boy 2 play Help Me? Seems like its in F minor. Is he playing in 2nd position on that? I hear notes that almost sound wrong. Thanks David.

Answer

Hello Francis. Yes, he uses the Bb Harmonica in this famous tune. Due to the hook being Root flat-3 5th, it does imply minor. Rice Miller does use the 3 draw unbent (Major 3rd) in many places as well as the occasional 5+ (Major 6th). I agree, they sound a little bit off, but not enough to jump out as really wrong... it's in the spirit of the traditional blues where major and minor are mixed a tad. This is also a good example of when a tune was in minor, most classic players would use 2nd Position (not 3rd), and not being too hip on what to change to play IN minor, they mess it up a bit. The good thing is you guys are more educated now and will know how to navigate playing in minor better, in whichever position you choose.
