Hi.  In Solo Study 3, examples 1.3 and 1.4, I assume all the single notes are to be tongue-blocked and all the two-note harmonies not tongue-blocked.  Is that correct?

Hello ungar. Almost... the first line of Ex. 1.3 you see the note heads are all round (standard), so for the chords you just take your tongue off. On the IV Chord notice the slashed note head notation for the chords, so those are pulls. So... standard note heads means to take your tongue off (chording is done with the tongue off the harmonica) and slashed note heads are tongue block pulls.

Thanks. But in exercise 1.4,

Thanks. But in exercise 1.4, measures 7-8 for example, I get the impression you're tongue-blocking the GB chords (holes 2 and 3) but not the DG chords.  This would make sense, since GB chords are not really part of the chugging pattern. Is my impression correct?

Answer

You are correct. The D G of Bar 1 is a chord-related patter, from the chording/chugging world. With the G B, the B is a harmony of the G, so I just smirk while still in the tongue block to add that harmony.
