Two posts this morning can only mean I'm really into this! I started Solo Study 2 this morning Ex. 1.1 to 1.4. Noticed the general use of 3+ instead of 2 except for the last note in example J. Is this because beginners have trouble with 2 or is it because you believe the use of 3+ is more appropriate in this type of playing? Thanks!

In this case the 3+ decreases the movement required to play the licks. And yes, new players have better success with the 3+ over the 2, so that also weighs towards more usage of the 3+. When more bending is used the 2 draw will be used more, due to the 2' and 2" being under the 2 draw for immediate play.

Ryan

I hadn't looked at videos of you and Ryan as assumed they started where the Joe T. videos left off but just noticed some early Solo Harmonica material that likely is part of LOA 2 based on the titles. Haven't had the time to look at any yet but my guess is there's just so much material on the site there's often something new to discover. Noticed Ryan also has Accompaniment videos at this level. Not to mention Gary Smith who must be a good teacher for you to ask him to work on this material?

The Accompaniment Studies came online after Joe's time, so I made sure to have it included in Ryan's lessons. I use Gary Smith to speak about the subjects we do on the site as well, to add the perspective of another pro out there using this material. It's probably a good idea to look at Ryan's and Gary's material when you study something new... you're right, you'll find pieces of studies in there. All of this material pre-dates LOA, so you won't see anything mentioned in regards to LOA.

Accompaniment Followup

Understanding that LOA came later in the development of the site clarifies a lot for me. One followup question about the Gary Smith videos. Does the naming and numbering of the accompaniment videos correspond directly with your Accompaniment Study numbers? In other words, are the Accompaniment 2 videos with Gary directly connected to your Accompaniment Study 2 material? Or is the numbering system more about when you sat down with Gary? Thanks!

Answer

The numbering is in order of the contributor submission (when I sat down with Gary). His thoughts on accompaniment start with "Submission #27 - Accompaniment Playing" and then when the accompaniment lessons started coming online "Submission #35 - Accompaniment Lessons."
