David,
Solo 1...
Ex. 2.6 Rhumba.....are the notes after the rythmic breaths always slapped?
should I be trying to slap everything (except 1)..all the time in my blues studies?

Ex. 2.8 Slow Blues....is it OK to hit 3" instead of 3'.....before going natural?
is it preferred?

Ex. 2.3 Shuffle ... you mention the 5 draw is the FLATTED 7TH which sounds most bluesy.
Is that why my JUST TUNED harp has a 5 Draw tuned FLAT?

Thank you!
I am really enjoying Solo 1......your instruction as always is superb.

Answer

1) Yes, slap after that. In general, we slap a lot as blues harmonica players... but not all the time (most of the time, but not all the time). Were we're less likely to slap is in rock beats (like "The Strut" Bending Study Song #3), passages that are triplets (we commonly slap the first of each triplet figure... the downbeat) and finally on pretty songs (think beautiful flowing melodies). Again, these are just general statements, it's 100% context and player preference driven.

2) 3' is the note you want... 3' is bluesy and 3" is not.

3) That's correct... Just (extremely flat) and Compromised Just (what most modern harps use) have a lowered 5 draw reed.

Glad you like it... I think it's fun as well.
