Hello Dave, I like Slim Harpo's style of playing and I feel its within my reach to learn... do you think its good for me to try to learn a few of his songs at this stage of my skill level? do you recommend that?
Regards,
Preston

Answer

It's always good to sit down, slow down and try to work out playing of the masters... take your time and enjoy the process.

Check out the current

Check out the current Newsletter. There is a Transcription of Slim Harpo's Baby Scratch My Back. It's not too complex at the early intermediate stage, as long as you get your 3 draw quarter step down. I've been hacking away at it a little each day.

Don't forget Shake You Hips!

Don't forget Shake You Hips! Good list though. I'm going to wait till I get Baby, Scratch My Back down, then just use the Amazing Slow Downer to learn the other ones by ear. Transcriptions are great but from watching interviews on here it seems like most of the greats learned by ear anyways. I don't want to paint myself into a room where I can only play songs that are transcribed.

From what I can tell, Harpo's stuff isn't insanely complex. Just do your best and ask David if you have questions about the key or techniques. That's what I would suggest.

Yeah trying to work it out by

Yeah trying to work it out by ear is great for learning... any day better than transcribed music.... but I need to find the time :(.... Finding the Key is easy but sometimes I wonder which harp Position he uses or if he uses some other tuning!!.... I'll definitely be asking David for help as I go along I can see that....
