Signaling the band as a soloist

Hi, David:

Hope your trip/surgery were both a success.

When I solo with a band (not as a bandleader), is it acceptable to give the band direction? For example, the signal to "play softer"? How about including breaks in a solo?

Thank you Marc, my trip to Japan went well and my knee surgery yesterday seems like a success. Yes, it's fine to signal the band to play softer at the beginning of your solo and it's fine to signal breaks during your solo.
