I stripped an ald Shure 444 desktop microphone from it's element, a 99B86. On top of the element there's this little disc with a hole in the middle. I believe I read somewhere on the net, Greg, that you allways remove these little discs? Ehm, how can I remove it, it seems to be glued in place? Or is there no sonic difference with or without this little disc? And another thing, would you happen to know if a Shure CM element will fit into an Astatic T3 shell with the swivel intact? Or is this element to deep to go inside the T3 shell with the original swivel in it?

Edit : I just tried to fit the Shure CM element in the T3 shell. It barely seems to fit but it does fit. With a dremel I grinded a little bit of the little pieces of metal that hold the swivel in place on the inside of the shell and sure enough it fits.

It fits!

Hi, Jack

99B86 CM - very good elements! Should fit in the T3 just fine - it will clear the swivel but you might have to experiment with the rotation angle of the element in the grill. I remove those disks. The glue isn't very strong. Being careful not to distort the multi-hole plate below, you can grab the disk via the center hole with a needle nosed pliers and twist/pull. (If you put the pliers in too far, you run the disk of pushing the multi-hole plate inwards to the point it will interfere with the diaphragm, so try to avoid that!) It will either pop the disk off or start to tear it. You can safely work that tear down toward the perimeter. It will usually pop off before you get there!
