Hello Greg,

Your're doing great work here Brother--I dig it. Jason Ricci looked and sounded terrific--with your SM57U in clear view, on the recent HBO Rock and Roll Hall of Fame special.

Years ago, David gifted me a mint conditioned Shure 533SA. The cartridge is so-so, but the head is super awesome. I love how the bottom portion of the ball is entirely closed off. But alas ... it's heavy.

I'm spoiled now with your SM58U. I love the simplicity of plugging it in directly to the PA, when guesting with a friend's band. Would this 533SA be a valid candidate for you to:

  • upgrade the cartridge for both tube and solid state amplication
  • shorten the body with either with a VC or repurpose the stock on/off switch (actually that would be perferred over VC)

Your Harpsmith, Kinya

Hi, Kinya

Hi, KinyaYeah, the solid lower half of the ball on those mics makes them much easier to cup effectively - and they do have a really warm tone.

If my memory is correct it does not use the same head/barrel joint thread as the SM57/58/545 so it can't be ultimatized. That means there isn't much I can do. When people need spare parts about the only thing you can do is look for another of the same model.

Sorry!

/Greg
