Going through LOA 1, Solo Harmonica study 1, Working with a metronome.

You discuss that a swing/shuffle rhythm ….the eight notes are …down beat – long

And the up beat – shorter.  Yet the triplet it is all equa-distant .  It seems like it should

Be the first note of the triplet – should be longer and the # 2 and # 3 notes should be

Shorter .  It makes sense in that it would be logically following suit.

Yet you don’t say that.  Could you please comment on this inconsistency ….or

‘that’s just how it is ….deal with it‘ ?

            Thank you for your time

                       Steve

Answer

Good morning Steve. The first two triplet eighths are tied, making your downbeat eighth note 2/3 of the beat, and the upbeat eighth note 1/3 of the beat. If you would like to look into this further, Ex. 7 in the Rhythm Training lesson (http://www.bluesharmonica.com/lessons/rhythm_training) spends some time on this.
