Raining outdoors

This solo piece is played on an Ab harmonica (2nd pos). I rarely play it but it comes in handy when our guitar player breaks a string or some other technical problem occurs. I'm not a good storyteller or joker so I just take my harp and play this song to avoid an awkward silence during gigs.

I tried to play in a Sonny Boy II spirit ("No nights by Myself" feel) but when I listened to it afterwards I noticed I didn't quite succeed.

Hope y'all enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stuck Blues

The intention here was to play a head, then do a chorus using octaves (well, 'splits' anyway - can't manage octaves yet), then shift to the bottom end of the harp and finally to return to the head, but I messed up the guitar playing (as usual!) and played an extra bar in at the start of the 4th chorus. I didn't realise until I tried to play the harp part, so I just faded out instead. The title refers to being stuck in because it's raining, not to any problem with the harp's slide or anything like that!

You gotta move

This is a tribute to the great Mississippi Fred Mc Dowell (You gotta move/Amazing Grace). I'm not a singer so I decide to blow harp rather than sing. I just recorded some backing vocals for the rythm base. All the best from france.

Corrine, Corrina

This is a blues traditional first recorded by Bo carter in 1928. It has become a standard and has been recorded by Bob Wills, Cab Calloway, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters etc.

I tried to play it as old-timey as I could, using alot of tongue flutters and different splits. The song is played in first position (Bb), I've tongue blocked almost the entire song (may have switched to pucker, dunno when).
I've played the theme 3 times and tried to give each chorus a different approach, tried to emulate some prewar-players techniques. In the end there's an overblow on 6 blow.

Surf Blues

I used one of Jimi Lee's jam tracks for this (the link to buy them is in his interview on this site).

The first chorus sticks fairly close to the bass line (EDIT: I mean the guitar line)

Second chorus focuses on the 4/5 warble.

Third chorus focuses on the 3 hole.

The fourth chorus borrows heavily from the head to David's 'Big Boys Jam' (from Blues Harmonica Jam Tracks & Soloing Concepts #2) - I struggle to play this but it's cool lick (had to change the rhythm here, though).

Fifth chorus is based on some Big Walter stuff I've been listening to. continue reading...

Ramshackle Jingle Bells

Thought I'd get in on the Christmas action while there's still time. This is a pretty rough version featuring some dodgy guitar playing, foot stomping, spoons (in the absence of authentic sleigh bells) and one of those kids' sliding voice pipe things (they probably have a name, I don't know) which my son felt the need to add at the beginning and end. If nothing else, it's good practice for 3 draw bends. Happy Christmas!

Here we go!!! This is a natural for the tongue blockers. Decided to have fun with it and used my microPog octave pedal to try to get an organ effect. Bb CX12 - boy, talk about a mouth full getting slaps and octaves and holding the mic.

Merry Christmas / Seasons Greetings to all!!
