Hello Kinya, I am currently working on a restoration project of a 12 hole diatonic marine band harp with a non-sealed wooden comb.I have flat sanded the comb, the draw plate and straightened the blow plate in order to increase the air tightness. I am afraid however that after some playing the comb being non sealed would inevitably swell and compromise the air tightness, so I am looking for some kind of non-toxic sealant I could use.Could you please recommend something to me?An non-toxic aerosol solution would be preferred, because I have the idea that that way I could also preserve the flat surface of the comb. Thanks!

Sealing Combs

Good to hear from you Angel,

My preferred sealant is made by Verathane (I believe a subsidiary of Rust-O-Leum). The water based, Semi Gloss Polyurethane. Available in both brush on and aerosol.

I recommend a minimum of four coats, sanding between with 320g, 400g, 600g, then 1000g

Good luck!

Your HARPSMITH, Kinya
