Hi Fritz,

I looked back through all of your previous posts that I could see and didn't see this topic covered, which probably means it's there and I missed it......

Proper replacement grill screws for Shure Bullets: Are these commonly available and if so can you suggest a supplier? What are the specs on these little beasties anyway - TPI, Pitch, length, width - if you happen to know.

Thanks in advance,

Loren

520 GRILL SCREWS

Hello Loren,
Couldn't find the details on any of the SHURE DISCONTINUED archives (a very useful site) so I had to take it upon myself to figger it out. I've done some noodling, taken a bunch of measurements, made some notes and done loads comparisons, and come up with this: The 520 'Green Bullet' and related 32-257 bodied mics use a flathead slotted countersunk 4-36 screw that's 3/16" long, made of brass, and is plated with Nickel or Chromium. The odd variable is in the diameter of the head surface. I'd known that earlier examples were smaller and that I would have to machine the newer screws down to a smaller wire gauge for them to fit into the countersink of the older grills, but there seems to be a sliding scale. Some have very pronounced shoulders, some are nearly parallel. Go figger...
As for a source? Besides buying directly from SHURE, you could try McMaster & Carr.

Fritz, Thanks, much

Fritz,

Thanks, much appreciated!

Lol, is there anything McMaster & Carr doesn't have? I chucked (sent to recycling) my hard copy of their giant catalog several years ago when I moved. This is a good excuse to get my address updated with them and get another, particularly as I will finally have workshop space again in about a month.

Small Parts probably has the screws as well, if anyone else goes looking for them and McMaster Carr doesn't have them or is out of stock.

I didn't realize Shure even sold those screws any more.

I'll try to follow-up here regarding where I end up finding them, for future reference.

YEOW!!! I've done more comparisons of various 520 shells and found -to my horror- that more I've tested seem to be tapped for 3-36 screws, NOT 4-36. Very close, but there IS a difference...
