Hi David,

Is there any practical benefit to memorising the note names whilst I go through the scales, or am I better off focussing on developing fluidity through muscle memory?

I have been saying the note names in my head as I practice, but there's no point if it's unnessesary?

Many thanks

Saul

Hello Saul. Yes, it is

Hello Saul. Yes, it is helpful to say the names as you play the scale. I would do both... say the names at the slower speed and then just go for muscle memory at the paster speeds. For note/scale degree/chord tone memorization, the Hole Changes exercise in Accompaniment Study 5 is unparalleled.
