Been working on various chord chugs to add to my playing. While I've picked up some here and there, and also came up with my own, I'd like to know if there are any resources to learn more chugging rythyms from.

Thanks

Found some good stuff in the Joe Filisko area

Just went through the Fox Chase/Lost John study. Some good stuff there. A while back I had gone through the train imitation introduction. I am going to look through the train imitation artist studies next. This may help add some chug repertoire to my playing.

Chugging resources

You can't go wrong with the Filisko stuff; he's the master of that style. In addition to what's here I suggest going to his website and purchasing his Sonny Terry artist study and his Sonny Boy II artist study (Rice Cool Blues). Both of these resources are excellent and will improve your rhythmic playing. If you have a chance to study with him directly at a workshop I would.

You can find a lot of the old school chugging masters on a two CD set called Harmonica Rarities that should be available from Bluebeat.

Madcat has a DVD on rhythm playing that is very interesting but he is the only person who plays that style so it's hard to work into your playing. Norton Buffalo has two good DVDs which show how you can work rhythmic patterns into more rock/heavy blues playing. RJ Mischo also works a lot of rhythmic playing into his stuff and he is an excellent listen.

Good luck.

I've ordered some Filisko material before (Bye Bye Bird, for example). I was wondering what to order next, so some good suggestions you recommended. I met Joe a year ago at a Blues festival, and attended one if his workshops. That was cool. I'm not too far away from the Chicago area and have been wanting to get down there for some lessons or attend a class of his. Just need to make the time.

Madcat

Madcat learned from studying Sonny Terry, so I'm not sure I'd agree that he's the "only one playing that style." Also, he's been very inventive in mixing up genres. So if your focus is not strictly traditional chugging, he's a great resource.
