HI everyone,

I've been playing (badly)for many years, primarily for my own enjoyment. Recently started this program. I can hit the chord changes, bend a bit, and generally play along with a jam track, albeit without much creativity. I have now been invited by a friend who is a solid guitar player to accompany him at a a local jam, but we need a few suggestions of what to play. We can both sing a bit, so I was thinking of a simple 12 bar blues that we can trade vocals, maybe each take a solo, and get out of there with no fruit hurled at us.

any suggestions?

Many Thanks

Andy

I Want You With Me

This song is found in Accompaniment Study 1 of LOA2 and as such lies Toward the easier end of the spectrum. Coincidentally I happened to listen To it today to compare it with Gary's Blues and Buffet Line, both of which I'm working on now. It's a catchy tune and IMHO easier tha Gary's Blues or Buffet Line.

Check out fellow harpers on YouTube

Just some ideas:

For example this guy: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYsGP8KgS1EsjwgFoMF0duw

He has a couple of covers of classics (Dust my broom, Before your accuse me) which also include his tabs and backing tracks. Don't look too hard to rehearse and get something decent out of. This is the kind of blues tune I'd try, and since you're willing to sing and have a guitar friend you can just use part of the licks (folks etc) instead of having to learn the whole song.

I've lately been trying this version of Howlin Wolf's Smokestack Lightnin' riff, which is fairly simple and catchy https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R8Tp_y4YLmw but I don't think I'd dare to sing it in public, my vocals wouldn't cut it.

I also like listening to harp covers by great players like Roly Platt's cover of Over the rainbow https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYsGP8KgS1EsjwgFoMF0duw and working out parts by slowing down the tempo on the player (this one requires a country tuned harp). Again, you could just take some parts to fill an with harp instrumental chorus or two and sing + play guitar on the rest. You don't have tabs here, but you can probably tab by ear something which is playable enough for your own skill level.

And, for a change instead of mellow stuff you can also try to get some from https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYsGP8KgS1EsjwgFoMF0duw or copy parts of this version of personally like a lot https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYsGP8KgS1EsjwgFoMF0duw

Good luck and hope to hear back on how it went!
