I'm having some trouble on the "Rollin' Rhumba" (version 1). Specifically, I can't regulate my breathing well during Chorus 6. Almost the entirety of the chorus is draw notes, and there's really no time to exhale. It's a quicker song than any I've done before on this site, and there's no long held notes that I can allow to decay (and use that time to catch my breath).

Do you have any techniques to help with this, or is it a matter of practicing it until my lungs get used to it?

Answer

Hello Marc. Exhale through your nose and mouth on the downbeat rests on Bars 2, 4, 6 and 8. If that's not enough, exhale through your nose on the quarter note 5+'s. Give this a try.

I will. Thanks.

This song is more intense than the previous songs. There's less of a balance between draws and blows (for example, "Walk With Me" is really balanced, as you pointed out).

Yes, the goal is that each song should challenge you in new ways. You don't get much rest when you study with me, but the end result is that when the time comes when you've finished your technique studies with me that there isn't anything out there that can't figure out and play on your own.

I'm seeing that already. It's actually a lot of work-- I find that I'm not really "playing" harmonica as much as "studying"-- but I'm seeing rapid growth. The players that pass through your system are really well-balanced and knowledgeable musicians. I've told you this before, but there's really no other system that compares to yours; it's comprehensive and it has really added a new depth of enjoyment to my harmonica practice.

Glad to hear it. When you're paying money, it's studying. It's my job to push and challenge you.
