Hi Kinya,

I viewed your videos about reed gapping.

When you say that the reed should enter the slot as evenly as possible, does that means that the reed should be as straight as possible?

But when you gap the reed in level1 method 3, doesn't create a curve in the reed's shape?

Thanks for your time.

Simon

Further

Hi Kinya,

If we go further, don't you destroy what you did at level 1 when you do level 2?

Many thanks!

Eddy

Hello Guys:
Thank you for watching Harp Tech Study 4

Q: When you say that the reed should enter the slot as evenly as possible, does that means that the reed should be as straight as possible?
A: Yes.

Q: But when you gap the reed in level1 method 3, doesn't create a curve in the reed's shape?
A: It would appear that way, but the focus is to lift the back of the reed. The feeler gauge simply acts as a sling, distributing the load. Give it a try, it will surprise you how well this technique works for quick and safe calibrations.

Q: If we go further, don't you destroy what you did at level 1 when you do level 2?
A: Yes. The reason for demonstrating the numerous techniques is to provide the Harp Tech with choices. You practice and chose the one the fits your style.

Your Harpsmith,
Kinya

Here how I see it

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the reed can be both straight and ANGLE up from 0 point of reed base thereby allowing the reed to enter the slot like a "door on a hinge" but allow that door to rest in a cracked open position for the proper response that you are looking for.

Hi Kinya, I have a Manji in A

Hi Kinya,

I have a Manji in A key with problems in the 2nd and 3rd holes.
First I felt them "slow", so i decreased the gap, but then they became kind of "heavy".

So I tried pressing on the rivet side to set the 0 point, and then regapping with the reeds with a feeler gauge, now they work pretty good!
But I kept the reed shape as other reeds, which is straight from the rivet to the half of the reed, and then taking an angle from the second half.

Good work Simon I'm willing

Good work Simon
I'm willing to bet, the reed now swings in/out of the slot evenly.

Your Harpsmith,
Kinya
