Hi.  I generally have no problem with bending the 2 hole, but on my D (Crossover) harmonica, it often fails to bend, and I get a whistling sound.  Or when it does bend down, the sound is pretty awful.  I'm wondering whether reed gapping would help and, if so, in which direction?

Thank you

Reed Gapping on D harp

Hello Unger, Good to hear from you.

Do you find it easy to bend your 2 draw on other D harmonicas? If so, then try this:

  1. Remove cover plates
  2. Insert your reed hook tool (Lee Oskar) or paperclip with a 1/8" right angle bend, into hole number two
  3. Turn your hook upward, so that it lifts the #2 BLOW reed out of the slot--be convincing, but gentle at the same time.
  4. Remove the tool. Replace covers in, then attempt your 1/2 step (F#) and full step bend (F). If this worked, stop adjusting the gap and re-assemble your harmonica. If this did not work, repeat step #3, only this time lift the reed higher out of the reed plate slot ... then release.
  5. Also try this, press down on reed #2 DRAW reed, near the rivet end, and watch tip of the reed drop into the reed plate slot slightly. This should help as well.

Let us know how it worked for you.

Your Harpsmith, Kinya

Thanks. I don't have any

Thanks. I don't have any other D harps, but have no problems with that bend on any others, nor with any other holes on the D. When I get a moment, I'll try your advice and let you know.

Next move

Hello Unger

If you are camera and computer savy, attach close up photos of the side profiles of both the #2 DRAW and BLOW reeds. This will require you to disassemble your harmonica, but it will be worth it. Once I see it, I will be able to give you my prognosis.

I'm on the road right now,

I'm on the road right now, but will try narrrowing the draw and blow gaps when I get home, in a few days, and let you know.  I don't see how I can get a photograph of them though.

Thanks

I tried narrowing the 2 hole

I tried narrowing the 2 hole gaps.  It bends a little easier now.  I'll see if the situation improves with practice; if not, I'll work on it some more.  Thank you.
