Hello harpsmith! how are you doing?

I have a question about reed gapping. I´ve been trying to adjust the reeds for some time, and after 6 mounths I think I get it. When I´m practicing and playing by myself at home, the harp plays and bends wonderfully. But when I need to get a little bit louder and agressive on a live session, the reeds starts to choke, especially the blow reeds, wich I adjust to bend more easily, and also some draw reeds too (i dont do overblows/draws). What should I do to make the harp play perfectly on both situations??  What I´m missing??

thank you Mr Harpsmith

Sounds like a bad news and good news situation.

Hi Elmo

Sounds like a bad news and good news situation.

It appears you are doing everything right -- that's the good news (did you watch the Harp Tech Study on gapping)?

The bad news is you MUST curb your enthusiasm on the bandstand. The extra hot sauce your pushing through your horn is stalling your closely gapped reeds.

Tips:

  1. Have two sets of harmonicas: one will have the close gapping for lower volume and dynmamic type playing, and the second will be more like a factory type out-of-the box setting (larger gapping) for your "going crazy on the bandstand" playing.
  2. Assemble a Doc Brown's Flux Capacitor "in the ear monitor" system like I did (see past forum), so you can actually hear yourself playing on the bandstand, and not try to compete with the loud volume of the band.

Your Harpsmith, Kinya

really interesting to run your own in-ear monitor mix striaght from your amp! that is fascinating, do you end up using that feature often Kinya?

Hey Michael, Good to hear from you.

I found my DBFC rig to be essential when I do guest spots with loud bands. Takes 60 seconds for set up ;o)

Your Harpsmith, Kinya
