Hi David,

So I'd like to record some of my song submissions using my bassman. Unfortunately, when I do this with the mic on my phone, it over distorts the phone speakers and the audio comes out sounding horrible, even with the volume on my bassman turned way down. Can you recommend a good personal audio recorder for under $100 that may work better than my phone mic?

-Taylor

Amazon sells a Zoom H1 for $86. Are these decent mics?

Answer

Put your phone in a different part of the room... around the corner even... experimentation is the key.

I have not purchased any personal audio recorders... so I'm sorry I'm of no help. Zoom has been known for being very good... check their reviews. Sorry that I can't be of more help.

Thanks Dave, I tried that

Thanks Dave, I tried that without luck but I'll try posting this up on the gear forum. It probably doesn't matter too much at this point in my studies. You're the only one hearing me play and it seems like acoustic is working fine. Plus, I can't hide behind amp distortion.

if i may chime in, re the Zoom

excuse me please if i am speaking out of turn..just that i have some experience of the Zoom recorders. we used a H1 to record our band jams, and it was quite adequate. still quite possible to overdrive it i discovered at one time, but it was generally really good. we switched to an H4 after a while and it was markedly better, but the H1 is a decent basic unit

H2

I've used a Zoom H2 for a couple years and been very happy with it.
