Man, the weather up here in the Great Northwest has been an ongoing sog-a-thon!

In light (or dark) of this, I'd like to urge you tin sandwich jockeys -ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU BLOWING THROUGH CRYSTAL ELEMENTS- to take extra precautions with LORD MICROPHONE! Going out? Traveling? Storing your mics in a 'questionable' environment?
PLEASE! Spend some change (or raid the kitchen drawer) and secure them in self-sealing baggies. You know, ZIPLOCs or their equivalent. Protect them from an accidental sponge bath. The crystal you save may be your own...

Fritz: Should I put a desiccant pouch in the Ziploc with my crystal mic?

RAIN RAIN...

Hello Jon,
The baggie is there to provide protection from errant spillage and rainage -and also preserve stability for the mic's environment as it doesn't like big atmospheric changes.
On the use of desiccants (silica packets, etc.) my vote hasn't been cast. While they may be a benefit in stabilizing a well-used crystal that sees a lot of exposure, I would caution against over-drying the Rochelle salts as I equate over-dry with brittle, brittle with fatigue, fatigue with breakage, breakage with failure. I will admit to not having any scientific references on the matter, only my observations of individual examples. Again, STABILITY is what you want.
