Pulls...why block the 4 hole?

Hello David,
Regarding pulls...if i tongue block slap of 4 blow for example...and am going to do a pull (blow) 1234... i dont see any difference in just not blocking that 4 hole because when you blow that 4 get hit again anyway...
does that make sense?
I cant hear any difference..and it is a lot simpler..

Answer

That means either you're not really blocking the 4th hole or your tongue is coming off unevenly and sounding the 4th hole first, which will cause the pull to lack its articulation. Use more of the top of the tongue. If you don't block the 4th hole you're playing what's essentially a flutter tongue, which has no articulation. Record yourself doing the pull exercise from Tongue Blocking Study #3 and send it to me via the song submission form... that's the only way I can hear if you're doing it correctly.
