Not really sure how to ask this one. I've been told I'm too hesitant or 'shy' in my playing and I need to be more assertive. I've worked on timing and am trying to reduce the amount of force I use in blow/draw. Do people like Gary Smith, Andy Just and those that play 'gritty and dirty' just use more force, have certain amp settings and pedals, use certain notes or ??????????? I've listened and listened but just don't seem to be able to translate it into my playing.

Does my question even make sense?

Answer

As your teacher at bluesharmonica.com (you've sent in many submissions), there's no secret sauce... what you're playing sounds good, and it will get better with time. Blues scale practice can help for you to know where the bluesy notes are, but that's coming through in your song studies anyways. It's okay to dig in and play louder for dynamic effect, but not all the time. Keep working hard... each year you play you'll look back and say "I'm better than I was last year!" keep at it!

Thanks David - gawd it's hard

Thanks David - gawd it's hard to be patient and work away. But OK, I'll keep the faith and plug away.

But one of these days, its gonna be so dirty, they'll have to x-rate it!!! ;-)
