Hi, David:

What is your opinion on these programs that claim to train pitch perfect hearing? The most famous, I think, is the one offered by David L Burge (his Perfect Pitch Ear Training Course). Is this something that's attainable? Is this something that is worth pursusing on its own (separate from the ear training that's naturally occurring as I progress through your lessons)? Is this nothing more than a parlor trick?

Hello Marc. This is a form of ear training, and any ear training is time well spent. I don't teach this on the site, so go for it. I did ear training once a week for three years in my music theory class in college and it was very helpful. Best wishes on this, I look forward to quizzing you :-)

By the way, perfect pitch is something you're born with (this is a marketing buzz word), you'll be developing relative pitch.

Oh yah... about being quizzed... if you get an ear training program on the computer, you enter your answer (which note you think it is) and it will tell you if you're correct or not... this is good.

Thank you, David. Is there any specific method that you recommend? Do you know of any particular website, app, book, or other materials that would be best (or should I just start playing piano, too)?

I don't, I'm sorry, this is not something I commonly teach and it's been over 20 years since I studied it. Most likely you'll work with different systems over the years, so just dig into one that looks good and is rated well. I do recommend you have a piano, and learn the very basics of where notes are on the piano. You don't need to know how to play it like a piano player, but you'll want it for reference.
