So I just got started on the LOA and there seems to be some inconsistancies between the video lesson and the Position Chart (or I'm not understanding you correctly <-- most likely). On the Understanding Positions video in Blues Harmonica Fundementals you state that 2nd position on an A harmonica is E. But when I look at the Position Chart it says that it is D. You also say that the D harmonica plays in the key of A when the chart says G. And you say that the G harmonica plays in D whereas the chart says C. I'm pretty sure that I'm misunderstanding you. Could you help me clear up the confusion? Thanks!

Answer

Hello heath.collmer. Positions can be a confusing subject. Let's look at the chart together.

Top row, at left, is the Band Key of G. This is the key you and the accompanying musicians (live or jam track) are playing in.

Moving to the right you see the harmonicas you can use to play in that key. You can use a G Harmonica in 1st Position to play in the Key of G. Or, you can use the C Harmonica in 2nd Position to play in the Key of G. Or, you can use the F Harmonica in 3rd Position to play in the Key of G.

Does this chart make sense now?
