When writting the actual notes on the the lines of sheet music...how do you know......

1. Whether  to make the line extending from the note go up or down ?

(example 4.4 - the first note 'C' - the line extends down from the note and in example 4.5 the first note 'A',

th line extends UP from that note)

2. What side of the note to extend the line from (in front of the note or in back of the note)

(example 4.4 - the first note 'C' the line comes off of the FRONT of that note and example 4.5 the first note

is 'A' and  the line extends from the BACK of that note)

                Thank you for your time

                               Steven Barta

Answer

Good morning Steven. Answers below...

1) Generally, notes B and higher (middle line) the stem goes down... and notes A and below the stems go up.

2) When the stem goes down it is on the left of the note, and when the stem goes up it's on the right.

Answer

The middle line is your best reference. If you're not sure, do what you did before and look at other sheet music examples. Over time it will become second nature.
