Hi,

Would like to mention that I really love all the harp tech stuff. I'm a tinkerer by nature but am also very poor. It's good to have something to reference before I open up a harp and ruin it. Your lessons have given me some confidence and I've been able to successfully repair two of my sticky harps as a result. Thanks!

I do own a Hohner Pro Harp MS though. Draw reeds have been sticking on this one. I attempted to remove the cover plates and noticed a strange looking bolt holding it together. I attempted to remove it with a jeweler's phillip's screwdriver. I was unsuccessful. I assume these are the type of things that work well in a mass production facility, but it appears I don't have the correct tool to remove the bolts.

Do you have any suggestions for a proper tool to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Screwdriver

It's a screwdriver known as a pozi-drive. They can be had at Wiha tools online. A number 1 will do the trick.

If you've used a phillips screwdriver on the head then you may have worn the x shaped groove a bit. If that's the case, what you could do is it take a hacksaw to the screw head and saw a regular straight groove into it that will allow you to unscrew using any (small enough) regular slotted screwdriver. It's a good bit of customising in any case as you can get into the harp without the more specialised posi no. 1screwdriver, especially useful when out and about without your own tools... :O)

Yes, I did unfortunately use a phillips before I realized my mistake. I did notice that there are duplicates on the bottom cover plate as well that I didn't. I'll look into getting the correct tool and trying to open from the bottom. Perhaps that will work. I'll let everyone know of my success or lack thereof.

Thanx Jon and Rob!
I fully understand about being poor. Why do you think they call it the blues? Until you produce your Gold Record and start rolling in the cash, get into the habit of acquiring used harmonicas.

Start with your own collection by never throwing away your harmonicas, because you can cannibalize it for parts. I especially like Hohner SP20 harmonicas, because the reeds match the Marine Band and Golden Melody. Plus you can use the cover plate nuts and bolts on your ProMaster harmonica.

Speaking of Rob's hack saw idea, protect the other parts of your harmonica with blue painters tape--that way if the saw slips ...

Your Harpsmith,
Kinya
