Modal blues

David, in the Performance Training / Grooves lesson, you and the band talk about soloing over modal blues and how it can easily become noodling. I'd like to get a few examples of good blues harp solos over a modal beat to help me figure out how to structure them - can you recommend any?

Answer

Check out Little Walter's "Roller Coaster" and Mark Hummel's "Hand Jive." Notice that each has a cool hook played by the band. The key in soloing is in playing a lick, exploring it for a bit and then moving on to another lick and repeating the process. You can also use a bit of the blues scale if it's a bluesy song. You can also explore textures and such... it's wide open. Have fun!
