A microphone (or guitar) will always lose a certain amount of treble when the volume pot is turned down. A small capacitor soldered across the two "hot" lugs of your mic's volume pot will keep the sound from becoming "darker" when the pot is turned down. You can experiment with different values, but 100pf is a good start. This mod has been around for years, but some of you may not have tried it. I think Rod Piazza was the first well-known guy to start adding this cap.

Yes you're right Skip. Rod

Yes you're right Skip. Rod Piazza is famous for this mod. So much so, that it's generally referred to in harmonica circles as "The Rod Mod". I believe it was first used on a guitar though.
It's also worth mentioning that it's usually only done on mics with crystal/ceramic elements. I don't know if it affects CM/CR elements the same way.

Mic volume pot mod

Hello Kingley- Leo Fender began using the capacitor on the volume control of Telecaster guitars in the early sixties. It would work for any element, but I have seen them mainly on Rick Estrin's old crystal elements. I might add that it is not essential. The darker tone with the volume turned down may work well for many people. Thanks for chiming in on this topic..... I was afraid it might be "old hat" to harp players on the forum.
